ADD/ADHD Counseling

Do you struggle to keep track of all the thoughts in your head? Do you frequently fall behind on tasks and projects because you get sidetracked with whatever interests you in the moment? Paradoxically, are there times when you are “locked in” and feel like you could keep going on an activity for hours and hours?

ADHD is not a mental disorder. It’s a personality type, and it’s much more common than you might think. My work with clients struggling with ADHD is rooted in the hunter-farmer hypothesis of Thom Hartmann. According to Hartmann, all of the classic ADHD symptoms—impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattention—are characteristics of hunters in hunter-gatherer societies. Characteristics of successful hunters include:

  • They constantly scan the environment for clues of animal life.
  • They immerse themselves in the hunt where time is fluid.
  • They can flexibly change strategy on a dime.
  • They can quickly accelerate with bursts of energy.
  • They think visually in concrete pictures more than abstract words or feelings.
  • They love the hunt, but find mundane activities boring.
  • They take risks and love novelty.
  • They have a low threshold for mistakes and are prone to criticism of self and others.

If those descriptions resonate, and if you’ve wondered whether some of your challenges in daily life and in your relationships might be related to ADHD, I can help. We live in a farmer world, where the universal expectation is discipline, consistency, and predictability. Being a hunter in a farmer world typically leads to pain and confusion from banging your head against the wall, wondering what’s wrong with you. But there are practical, lifestyle aids and activities and rhythms that can bring you more into line with the way God made you. Together, we can make your life easier and more manageable.
